College Applications: on essays

Register for the school website of one of the colleges you are applying to. After beginning the application process, look for the essay prompt required for your school. Post that prompt on here. This will be the essay you are writing for my class! So pick a good one.

If you do not post a prompt by Thursday, you will be assigned a generic college essay prompt that may not actually be useful for you as you apply to your school of choice.

DUE THURSDAY 9/6

  2. Essay: The personal statements are a very important part of your application. They assist the university in knowing you as an individual, independent of test scores and other objective data. We ask that you respond to two of the topics below. Your personal statement should be no longer than a total of 500 words or 7000 characters for both statements combined. The best personal statements are not necessarily the longest ones.

If there has been some obstacle or "bump in the road," in your academic or personal life, please explain the circumstances.
How has your family history, culture or environment influenced who you are?
Why did you choose to apply to UCF?
What qualities or unique characteristics do you possess that would allow you to contribute to the UCF community?

  6. There are two writing samples for RISD.

First sample, please look ahead and address this question: How do you hope to have changed at the end of your time as a RISD student?

Second sample should be chosen from this list of options:

Every day we’re confronted by circumstances that range from the worrisome to the inspiring. What do you find most compelling in the world right now? How might this impact our future? What influence can you have on this situation?
Is there something you love, have to do, can’t stop thinking about? Write about a personal passion or obsession other than visual art or design.
Do visual creators have a responsibility to contribute to their community? If so, why and how?
